19/99 Beauty : a brand overview

Have you ever looked at a brand and thought it was out of your reach because of your age, your skill-level or your personal style? 19/99 Beauty has set out to narrow the generational gap that has been created by the beauty industry. One that has fostered a non-inclusive environment and a sense of excess. I think 19/99 Beauty go even further than this by producing really functional makeup that inspires a sense of freedom and creativity, without boundaries.

Founders Camille Katona and Stephanie Spence know their stuff. They worked at Bite Beauty and launched products and brands before. Joining forces with Simone Otis, a makeup artist, this Canadian trio set out to democratise makeup for everyone, whether they’re aged 19 or 99. I really appreciate the well designed, distinctly modernist, Bahaus-inspired aesthetic. Just look at the outer packaging – utilitarian but so cool.

Precision Colour Pencils

The Precision Colour Pencils are at the heart of the range, with 10 shades including neutrals, reds, pinks and blues.

Barna – deep charcoal brown shade

Lustro – champagne, satin-pearl

Neutra – dusty rose, warm undertones

Voros – red, slight blue undertone

Wasser – cool, water blue shade

Rosza – vibrant rose-pink

Meleg – fire orange, red undertones

Notte – rich indigo-navy blue

Bor – rich burgundy red, berry-plum undertones

Fiore – vibrant peach coral, warm undertones

I have the shades Lustro, Voros, Barna and Neutra and the formula of these pencils is quite amazing. They’re very pigmented, creamy in texture but satin-matte in finish and never drying. They don’t drag on the eyes or lips and a few swipes achieves an excellent level of opacity. The shades are designed to be used anywhere on the face, as eyeliner, highlight, bronzer, lip liner and even blush. Whilst it might feel a bit strange applying blush with a pencil, I love the versatility and precision this gives me. They’re also very handy for travel as they don’t take up much space at all.

High-Shine Gloss

From a distance, the High-Shine Gloss might seem pretty unassuming but paired with the Precision Colour Pencils it adds another level of versatility. I like to wear it over the top of Voros and Neutra for a glossy lip, as a highlight with Lustro or on top of Barna for an editorial glossy lid finish. On its own it’s also a lovely clear lip gloss that nourishes with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. It feels soft, smooth and cushiony and I’m happy to report that it’s not sticky at all.

Lash Tint Mascara

If you enjoy lashes that look naturally fluttery, separated and long then the Lash Tint Mascara could be your ideal mascara. The tubing formula is delivered via a very thin and long wand that separates like a dream. It doesn’t smudge, clump, flake or transfer and washing it off is a breeze. I use tubing mascaras because I have hooded eyes and they just don’t budge. I’ve also seen this product being used on eyebrows!

19/99 Beauty really stands out amongst the noise and although at its core it has a minimalist approach, on the outside it is bold, brave and unafraid to disrupt the status quo. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
